Cosmetic Surgery: Make Sure You Are A Good Candidate

Many people put a lot of time into choosing their plastic surgeon, but it could be a waste if they are not even eligible for the operation they want. If you plan to get a cosmetic surgery procedure done, you will have to show that you are a good candidate. This is something that you can prove to your doctor, but you might not be able to change the outcome if it is based on factors out of your control.

Most doctors approve of patients who want to get cosmetic surgery done to fix a particular problem. They might ask, for example, why you want a nose job, and you can respond that you do not like the size of your nose and want a change.

However, if you reply that people do not appear to like you and it is probably because of your nose, your doctor might conclude that you have unrealistic expectations. If you expect cosmetic surgery to solve anything other than the size or appearance of the body part you want fixed, you risk not getting the operation done because no surgeon can guarantee a lifestyle change after a surgical procedure.

Even if you have realistic expectations, you face the possibility of not being a good candidate for an operation. This may be due to a disease or condition you have, such as high blood pressure or heart disease.

The condition itself might not be an issue, but the treatment for it, such as certain medication, may be too dangerous to take during and after a surgical procedure. Therefore, sometimes whether you are a good candidate or not is out of your hands, and you may have to consider nonsurgical procedures instead.

You may have an issue that you can change that will make you eligible for the cosmetic surgery you desire. For example, many doctors do not perform operations on smokers, since this habit can reduce circulation and make it difficult for your body to heal properly. Clearly, you have the option to stop smoking, if only temporarily, in order to get the operation done.

In general, not everyone will be approved for certain operations by their doctor. However, you should find out at the initial consultation. Until then, it is best to find out what makes a good candidate for the procedure you want so that you can let your surgeon know that you should be eligible for it.
